Western North Carolina Unicyclists

Our Members

Bill Spears, Public Relations and Spokesperson

Bill looks old but has the spark and drive of someone 40 years younger.  A great person to have on any ride, Bill's optimism and overall enthusiasm are invaluable.  Bill has the distinction of being the grandfather of mountain unicycling in Western Carolina.  In 1987, he put a 2.2 inch Farmer John on a Schwinn frame and pedaled the Pisgah National Forest.  His recent purchase of 36 inch unicycle has made him a master of long, tough rides on the road.

Jeff Ray

Jeff might as well turn pro, his legs are like the trunks of a tree and he enjoys the pain of long climbs, and warms up with twenty miles of single track.  Jeff competes in mountain bike races just to have some real competition.  He also competed in many road rides during the summer of 2009 including; the Asheville Mountain Sports Festival Wheel Ride for Food, the Fletcher Flyer 1/2 Century, the Devil's Fork Metric Century, and the Sleigh Ride for Kids in Asheboro.  If you're going to put money on a race winner, it's Jeff.  Currently, Jeff is working on a Teflon crotch replacement in order to break the 100 mile barrier.

Ben Richardson, web designer

Ben moved to Asheville from Anchorage, Alaska, where he got into mountain unicycling with an old George Peck unicycle.  George is credited for being the grandfather of rough terrain unicycling. Ben falls a lot, mainly because he goes for it.  Watch out.  Ben climbs like a goat and will try anything, at least once, but probably twice if you're cheering him on.  He also holds bragging rights for winning the 2008 Southeast Muni Fest Spencer/Trace ridge climb, a 7.2 mile loop, up a mountain in the North Mills River area and back down.  This ride will get your heart pumping!

Adam Masters, the brains behind Asheville Muni Fest

Adam's love for the sport has spread like an aggressive rash that feels so good to itch.  He is fearless and aggressive rider.  He is the 2007 Southeast Muni Fest Champion of the Kitsuma Challenge near Old Fort, North Carolina.   Unfortunately, Adam had an injury prone year in 2007 and has not been on his uni much, but the rash is back and he's looking forward to a great excuse to go ride.  Adam will have a knee rebuilt soon and we look forward to riding again with him soon.  Adam started the Southeast Mountain Unicycle Festival, now called the Asheville Mountain Unicycling Festival.  In 2009 it will be held September 25.  Hope to see you there.

Jack Igelman

Jack gets excited just thinking about MUni and the possibilities.  He is an author who writes many articles about the outdoors for Western North Carolina pubilications.  Jack is a great resource if you are looking to purchase your first unicycle or upgrade.  He stays current on all the latest greatest and would be happy to give you a free unicycle consult.  He is a partner with Second Gear in Asheville, our local unicycle store. Second Gear keeps unicycles in stock and can also special order one for you.  When you shop for unicycles at Second Gear, be sure to ask to speak with Jack.  Jack loves the trail and tears it up when he gets out there.  Watch out for this guy!

Remember to ask to talk with Jack if you check out Second Gear!
